June 21...A new life!

On June 21st...I took Vegas to his new people. They welcomed him with open arms and open hearts. He now belongs to a little girl ...who was very happy to see him that day. I think it was a bit of a surprise that he was actually arriving THAT day. :)

So upon a small meet and greet...Vegas was turned out directly with his new herd. They all came to meet him and smelling him etc...he was so very good. I was videoing him and I had goosebumps I was so proud of how far he has come in his whole outlook and behavior.

I got more on video than stills as the field is long and he went exploring his perimeter and learning his new eq system.

Upon settling in a wee bit...he was met by a mini stallion colt. He reared up in his face and bit his nose and then proceeded to graze beside him...friends. Who knew that Vegas would meet his match in a mini...haha.

I brought a mini home with me too...the mother of this little rambuctious sole. My daugher, who turned 7 on the 21st was very excited. She knew she was coming but didn't know when.

Time flies

So lots has happened on the Veggie front.

I found a new home for him to continue his recovery and to put him to a bit more one on one human companionship and friendship. He will belong to a 9 year old girl...who he has met and who loves him dearly. He'll be brushed and groomed and be able to live out with a herd on the side of a beautiful mountain in Quebec. I'm sure he'll be very happy. This little girl even rode him in the round pen and will continue to ride him at her place...first in the round ring and then maybe on trails with his booties. He will go to his new place in July. That's less than one year here at my place.

He is totally 'out of the woods' so to speak...and has plenty more good days than 'off' days.

His feet are getting great...his body is getting better all the time.

I finished fencing about 10 more acres of my land for the horses. They are loving the added extra space and grasses to eat too. Veggie 'pulled' a muscle in his Left knee, I think from all the extra 'fun' and running he is doing in the big field...but he is having to fully weight that RF foot and it's doing wonders for it. Everything happens for a reason.

Here are some updated pics...He still has not fully shed out. He never really had a super winter coat to shed out before...and he only just got it all together in January so he's keeping his 'vest' on for a while. The bugs started this year...black flied and mosquitoes are horrid...but he's not complaining. He is really a happy camper these days. NO NO NO aggression left in him...none of the 'old Vegas' coming out. He's confident and secure in his place. I'm so proud of him and hope he does well where he will go. Of course it's close enough so I can come help if needed.

I will post more pics of feet...etc...later... We are actually expecting high speed internet this summer. I can't wait!! Dial up is not much fun!

Summer is here??

So I've been really busy lately...and it's hard to write all that has been going on.

The last time I wrote it was like spring was taking it's time...now it seems like summer has arrived early...not much spring to speak of. Went from winter to summer in about a week.
So the rocks are sharp and there is no mud to speak of left...the feet are hardening up and of course an abscess for Veggie happened. RF foot...the problem child! :)
On the other hand I have started him in the round ring and doing more 'yoga' stretching in the form of static and moving stretches. I'll take some pics now and video and later as well to see how the body can change with a little proper 'dressage'.

He's taking him time to shed out though. The others are almost through and he's still hanging on to his first real winter coat. Yesterday he really blew a lot of it off so he's a little later but it's starting now.

As I said at the beginning of all of this...I didn't want to take him and keep him forever. I can't collect horses (although I probably would if I could ;) but I've been keeping my mind open to the possibility of Veggie going to another home for the summer. I think I have found the perfect place for him and the perfect people also. People who will love him and continue with his present day lifestyle, diet and trim and also start to trail ride with him and work with him more.
I'll keep you informed on that front too.

So this is just a little note to say I haven't forgotton...but I've been so busy and dial up is just killing me!! :)

Oh...remember those shoes.?? I cleaned Veggies feet and tried to place them on to check for size...etc. He had a bit of a panic attack. Poor buddy. He was really really trying to convince me NOT to put those shoes on his feet....so I let it be for a while. I'll try again later...and take pics.
He was very upset and scared...and it was only after I touched the metal to his foot...like he sensed it and wanted no part of that again. I did make him a promise that metal wouldn't touch his feet again...but I didn't think he'd take it so literally. :)

Spring is slow to come

This spring is seemingly taking for ever. It's ok for Veggie though...he's fine and for the first time the other day I looked out and thought...wow, he looks really nice. Complete with shedding hair and rolling marks.

The weather is interesting. It can be melting and then super cold so the field was completely ice or crust on the snow. The crust was so frozen one morning that even Daas could walk his way anywhere on top of it. We didn't try to run this day of course.

Instead we've been working on doing some stretching a 'yoga' for horses. :) He is getting so incredible at downward facing dog pose. :) He really tries so hard to do what ever you ask of him. He could have NEVER stretched this far last year. Look at him go!!
This was my oldest sons first time ever asking him to do the big big bow.

He comes when you call his name...in the certain way that I say it. ;) "Veggi ta bull"

He's travelling the frozen ground with more security than the fall that's for sure. He even comes across the frozen gravel when called. Something he wouldn't have done last year.

Veggie's past to present

I had the opportunity to put on a clinic at the stable where Veggie resided since he was 2 yrs old up until he came to me. It was put on by the barn manager who brought him to my place with the help of a couple other participants.

As I drove down the long driveway to get to the barn...there was a fair sized field with a bunch of horses out in the snow. I could see some pain poses right from my car and my heart sank a bit. It was almost time to be brought back in so the horses were out of hay and began to run. Some ran at others with ears pinned back...some just ran the fence line. They all knew that their hungry tummies would have the next hit inside and the time was near.

...anyhow...I was there for some people who were interested in this whole barefoot and natural approach, so I focus on them. Some lucky horses were already living out 24/7 in a smaller turnout around the back. They had a shelter and some trees and a bit of a straight place to go for a run. It was a good start...and with all the latest snow we have had...it was a clean and white place to stand on.

In the morning before I left I had taken some video of Vegas in the field with the boys. I showed everyone this and because they knew him before they really SEEN how well he was. One girl cried with joy to see him so happy.

She was his groom for a year or more (because he was a competitive/trained barrel horse$) and remenisced a bit about his history. Another young girl who used to ride him talked a bit to us also and about his past. The temperament he had (not good) and the shoes they were advised and tried to use to make him better. Knowing Vegas now...I realized just how far he has really come in 6 months and a wee bit.

Here are pictures of TWO such shoes. These are for the same horse...just at a different time.
This one below I call "INSTANT HEEL PAIN". Now how on earth it steel poking up into the frog supposed to 'support' and build a new stronger frog????? I don't get the reasoning behind this ancient approach. It's like a contraption from the dark ages.

In contrast...at least NOW he is popping out snow divots from his little feet. :) !!!!!!!!!!

6 months in Recovery..Magic Mark

The 6th month magic

It’s been 6 months since Veggie arrived. It’s been interesting all along to watch him become a contented spiritual being…he was not only in ‘rehab’ to build a better foot and body…but also a better mind. To take time to get in touch with his inner horse.

He has lost a few full frogs and grew new ones and lost them and grew another. Shedding baby frogs and building new, a little more mature, baby frogs.

He blew a few nasty abscesses that were sub solar for many months or years.
He needed to learn how to act and interact with a real herd of horses…complete with order. He needed to swallow some fear and hold his reactions and feel good about where he belongs and what part he brings to the herd. He made true friends and strong healthy relationships for the first time in his life. He played and ‘wrestled’ like a real boy.
Vegas...aka Veggie...aka 'Vegetable' (which he comes to and answers to IF you say it in his special way) :)

He's come a loooong way baby...in so many ways too.

This first picture below is the picture that convinced my soul to take him on. His face was so sad and shut down. He was in pain from fighting conventional treatments of shoes, stalls and drugs, acted out with bad behavior and a history of being a 'stallion' so was also a 'shut in'.

I knew all this going in...but I was sure he would change...everyone can change.

Next to this...a picture with my young son who goes to get him to groom and 'love' him sometimes. Try to look through the Canadian winter coat to see his health and happiness
and contentment (peace).

His feet have taken on a massive change most recently. From being locked in braces for so many of his formidable early growing years...at 5 yrs old...he still had the feet of an 18 month old horse. Not a healthy 18 months old either. I think now he is having the feet of a 4 year old and he is coming 6 this spring...a birthday that he would not have seen had I not taken him.

Nick likes to watch him get well and fails to understand how horses end up like this in the first place. He gets angry and frustrated at shoes and vets and farriers...but I try to keep the peace by telling him that it's a global thought process that needs to be (and IS) changing. Slowly, and because of horses like Vegetable...people will take notice and when the people know what to do and how to do it...the vets and farriers must sit up and take notice too...and that's how things will change.

Veggie has changed so much in his personality, that I'm sure those who knew him before would not recognize him now. They are always welcome to come and see him of course!! (hint hint)

In the pictures below, Nick is cleaning his feet and marvelling at how they have changed since he last looked at them...and beside is Vegas and Beta at the winter round bale and Jet and Rico sleeping in the snow. Beta and Veggie have this friendship with an understanding. When they first met there was a LOT of diagreement and discussions (read war wounds) on who would run the sho

I know people want to see more 'feet' pics...but that's only a part of his story.
His feet started to mature from formerly clamped 2 year old feet…and now are at probably a 3 or 4 year old practically over night. The great crack open has begun. Things are growing in a healthy way and it's great to see.

Here is some pics to look at for starters. I'm going to get some more x rays soon too.
Next blog...I visited the stable in which Vegas was at for age 2 to 5. Stay tuned...

Getting caught up

Since I last wrote about the January thaw...it has been terribly cold. Vegas handled the cold like a pro...no blankets necessary. I just keep 'stoking the furnace' with hay and they keep eating and stay warm.

Now it's getting warmer again....weather is so dynamic...as is the natural horse. Able to handle double digit freezing temperatures with changes up to double digit plus temps and back down again in flash freezes from rains to ice to ice pellets to snowing and blowing.

I did some night video for fun in a major storm. Most people are so worried about the horses going out at night or being in a storm. When I took the video...it had already been storming for over 12 hours. I personally love storms. Winter storms that is. Makes me feel so alive!

Veggie has been playing like never before all of January. He is happy and content to play with all the horses now. It's good to see. He tries to warn of his vicous kick but lately only popsup his hind end. Daas just scoots around to the front and Veggie starts playing with him again.

His feet are coming along...still a ways to go. They look light years ahead of where they started but still a long way to go to have 'beautiful' feet.

It makes me so sad to see his body and feet and know how they got that way. It's so sad to know that there are soooo many other horses in the world that are living his past right now. I wonder what it will take to induce a massive global change!? I wonder how many cases I (we)have to show and to whom...so that the conventionals will lend an ear.

Vegas...so far gone and under developed at such a young age because of what he was bred for. Color, speed..and money! He suffered because of it. Beauty turns beast!

Angry young horse, like so many others in pain and agony, in confined quarters and always hungry standing on hurting feet in soft bedding with toes pointed down and shoes on to squeeze to numbness, pads to rot everything under the guise of 'protection', and drugs and confinement to help with the pain?? I fail to understand why he and so many others are literally tortured under the hands of farriers and vets...the BEST in the land...and forced to endure. If they don't...they are beaten until submission or cast off and another more tolerant horse will take the place.

On the last day of January...the RF frog fell off again. It started to peel this time from the apex back and came off in one big peice again. I cut the rest of the big 'flap' off and was going to take a picture of it...but before I could...my dog ate it. :) oops.

I was able to take his heels back a lot more and uncover yet more hidden heel. Poor ingrown toenails are trying to come out and take their rightful place.

He has been doing great with his running and even plays when running now. He is really into rearing these days. Spends a lot of time on his hind legs...stretching up. He used to have an angry face when 'playing' but now has a consistent contented look. Finally he realizes that NO one is out to get him...he is sane! He answers to his name and is starting to come when called individually.

Here is Beta, Rico and Veggie playing with a stick.

January thaw!!

Well there is a saying that I'm sure you've heard. IF you don't like the weather in (fill in the blank Canada)...stick around...it'll change.

Change it did. It went from frigid cold to super warm, mild melting raining weather. All the wonderful snow we had melted right out from under me. :( I was afraid of the muck! and worried alot day by day to see how things would pan out for Veggie.

Turns out the trench we dug last fall helped tremendously as did the rock and gravel alley ways that I laid down last summer. Thank goodness. I don't fear spring quite so much now.

Rain is hard on winter coats and requires different management than snowfall. Rain leaves the coat very 'parted' to channel water off. Once dry it's very important to groom the coat to fluff it up again. Rolling is good too but you do a much better job grooming. After a rain or snowfall I always make sure to re fluff their coats. Veggie is getting less tense on his back and his muscling is becoming more normal...less tight!!
On a sunny day above freezing, I bring out the spray bottles to do a 'spa treatment' groom to the mane and tail.
Vegas likes head massages :)

Playing with Daas who is quite a might larger than he is...Veggie holds his own...and is getting used to incorporating his body to play rather than just the lips. There was a time not too long ago that this type of play initiated from anyone and he would go into his 'tazmanian devil' approach and basically freak out. He took it all as aggression towards him, instead of play. Now he is finally realizing how to spar with the boys and not fight to the death. ;) I see him playing so often now it warms my heart!

I call this type of play 'yoga for horses'...play pose. Good for the body, mind and spirit.

A couple of days pass and we get some snow again...yay.

One thing when it was muddy and then froze in ruts again...Vegas had No problem navigating them at all...he was looking just like the others and even ran across when it's play time.

I still try to run them daily...but when the footing is not good I don't. Then I just take a lot of care to where I spread the hay for them so they are keeping on walkin'. It's certainly never the same day twice for him...and that's good for the soul.

Here the 4 boys are running and playing and wrestling. Beta keeps out of this group play. He's too old for that rough stuff although he remains the herd boss and leader. He is well respected by all and befriended by them too.

Jan 1st 2008 Happy New Year

Well this year is coming in with a bang. Today we are having another snow storm...and the weather is quite cold. Tonight will go to -25 C. With the wind howling and blowing snow everywhere making for near white out conditions...and snow piling up in huge drifts.

Vegas is with NO blanket this time. He's doing great! I believe that he has finally caught up and his coat is taking care of him now. He was about 2 months behind in production and up here that makes a huge difference. The days are finally on their way to getting longer and I'm sure the rough part of this winter is over for him.
He is happy and content without blanket. His coat is parting properly to shed off the moisture and staying fluffed up to keep him warm...as are the others. He knows to roll and shake now too which is a bonus! Rolling in the snow takes moisture off the coat too and shaking throws everything to the outer hair and alot of it right off. He's feeling good lately for the running and is using his body well through the snow...good articulation of his joints.

I did some video today and took some pics...as best I could in the white out snow storm.

Temperament wise he is doing great.

Still getting used to being approached when I carry a bag flag or whip. He is a little tense and on high alert when I walk up...but with soft words he stands his ground and as soon as I place a hand on him he exhales and relaxes...then I tell him what a good boy he is and walk away. :) He watches me go.

Oh today I saw him play with Jet, Rico and BETA! I think I have some on video...haven't really looked at it yet....but that's a first. Just the lip grabbing game but it's awesome that him and Beta are now playing. What an honor for him to have herd leader initiate play without aggression and a milestone for Vegas to play back and not turn into the tazmanian devil boy! ;)

He doesn't seem to walk with any more 'limp' at all...hopefully his legs and muscles are evening out. Great workout daily to go through all the deep snow. Geez I love snow for that!! For that and feeding some oats and boss in nice Daas footprints. :) yummy! Stormy day delicacies.

Merry Christmas from Vegas aka Veggie

Thank you to those who have been kind enough to send some donations to go towards his recovery. It is VERY much appreciated! ...every single little bit helps! And thanks to those who have bought some hats as they also help Veggie.

Veggie has been very busy living in winter. He runs daily with the herd and he is finally knowing how to move as a 'flock' instead of banging into everyone in corners. He follows the herd around and sometimes leads them to the woods... and he's eating a LOT!

In the past few days...I have seen him actually PLAY with Daas, Rico and Jet. Amazing for him really. Instead of seeing the initiation of play as aggression and responding with his 'tazmanian devil' impersenation...he is playing. He only plays until it gets a bit 'boy rough' and then his fear factor kicks in and he stops playing. It's a great thing for him and I'm happy to see it in him...finally. Maybe the intense feelings he felt during the storm and bonding more with his 'brothers' he is feeling more like a horse should. He's exploring these feelings and overriding his learned responses towards aggression. I think he is finding his peace! Good timing.
Peace on Earth!!!
